Laser Eye Center of Carolina
CARY, N.C., June 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Laser Eye Center of Carolina (LECC) announced today that it has become the first and only medical facility in North Carolina to offer patients the benefits of the iFS femtosecond laser for corrective vision procedures such as corneal transplants, cataract surgeries and LASIK. A fifth-generation IntraLase laser, the iFSis a significant upgrade to its predecessors, offering a faster, more precise incision and the ability to cut complex shapes on the eye's corneal flap.
LECC Medical Director Dean Dornic expects his existing base of LASIK and corneal transplant patients to benefit immediately from the introduction of this technology:
"With this laser I will have the ability to construct matching 'tongue-in-groove' incisions and other shapes on the cornea that cannot be created with older lasers or blades," said Dean Dornic, MD. "The result is faster healing, less impact on corneal nerves, and therefore a reduced chance of side effects such as dry eye. In addition, corneal transplant patients of LECC will benefit from lower degrees of induced astigmatism."
Now the dominant method for performing refractive surgeries, IntraLase lasers revolutionized refractive eye surgery by replacing an oscillating metal blade with a laser to create the corneal flap: the first step in the LASIK procedure. The iFS IntraLase laser takes things a step further by enabling more precise incisions, 'lock-tight' or 'zipper' closures, and ultimately more secure wounds and better results.
Acknowledged in 2005 as the first Raleigh-area ophthalmologist to perform IntraLase, Dr. Dean Dornic M.D. continues to build on his reputation as one of the nation's most pioneering and experienced refractive surgeons with the addition of iFS to his practice.
"Laser Eye Center of Carolina is proud to be on the forefront of such leading edge-technology and are excited to bring this medical innovation to North Carolina," said Dr. Dornic.
