New Study Finds Lens Extraction Surgery More Effective Than Laser Treatment for Glaucoma

A new study by investigators at Queen's University Belfast has found at three years, initial clear lens extraction surgery is more effective than standard laser treatment in terms of patient reported health and vision, as well as for lowering eye pressure, when used to treat primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG).

Queen's reportedly led an international trial comparing two treatments for glaucoma — the standard laser iridotomy treatment and "lens extraction with intraocular lens implantation" — conducted on 419 patients treated in the U.K., Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Australia.

The researchers also reportedly found patients who received the lens extraction and implantation were more likely to report better quality of life and better vision.

The study was recently published in The Lancet Journal.
