Ahmed Capsular Tension Segments Now Available In U.S.

FCI Ophthalmics, Inc.

Marshfield Hills, MA – The US Food and Drug Administration has just recently approved the Ahmed Capsular Tension Segments (CTS) for marketing in the United States. They will be available from FCI Ophthalmics, Inc., the exclusive US importer and distributor.

The Ahmed CTS is a modified design of the Cionni capsular tension rings manufactured by Morcher GmbH of Stuttgart, Germany. The CTS is a partial ring of clear PMMA covering approximately one quadrant with a hole for temporary or permanent fixation. A single iris retractor hooked into the hole can support the segment during surgery. Lacking a pointed tip, these broad, polished ring segments will not tear the capsulorhexis during surgery. Following surgery, they can either be removed or sutured to the sclera for permanent support.

One or more segments may be used as necessary to support the areas of the capsule that have damaged or insufficient zonular support. Because it is only a segment, placement is easy and atraumatic, even before phaco. There are no sharp points or edges to tear the capsulorhexis and removal is easy. According to Dr. Ahmed, stripping cortex out from under and around the CTS is easy. The CTS can be used even when anterior or posterior capsular tears are present.

Now approved for marketing in the USA, the Capsular Tension Segments were designed by Dr. Ike Ahmed (University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada). It is available in the USA only from FCI Ophthalmics, Inc., a national company with sales representatives and distributors throughout the United States.

Already serving the ophthalmic community with a wide variety of products and devices, FCI is pleased to be able to provide surgeons with the new Ahmed Capsular Tension Segments for the management of zonular weakness.
