Second Sight Achieves Positive Outcomes for Retinal Prosthesis System

Implantable visual prosthetics manufacturer Second Sight Medical Products, Inc. announced it has received positive five-year outcomes for patients using its Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System.

The Argus II reportedly captures images on an eyeglass-mounted miniature video camera, converts the images to electrical pulses, and then transmits those pulses wirelessly to electrodes implanted on the retinal surface, bypassing defunct retinal cells and stimulating the viable retinal cells in patients with severe to profound retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

According to the clinical study of 30 subjects who are blind from RP or similar disorders, results after five years showed patients' visual function improved after implantation of Argus II and the improvements were sustained over five years. Additionally, researchers found the Argus II had a positive impact on patients' well-being, including a renewed connection with loved ones and the world around them.

The study results were recently published in in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
