NuVision Granted Full License by HTA to Distribute Ophthalmic Wound Dressing Made of Amniotic Membrane

NuVision Biotherapies, a spin-out company of The University of Nottingham School of Medicine, was recently granted a full license by the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) to distribute Omnigen — an ophthalmic wound dressing made from amniotic membrane.

Originally developed by university researchers, the product uses amnion, reportedly the innermost layer of membrane from the amniotic sac collected from caesarean deliveries of newborn babies. NuVision has developed a patented manufacturing process for the membrane. When applied to the eye, it works with the eye's natural moisture and to deliver a 70 percent reduction in pain for the patient and also retains antibacterial features to help fight infection and speed up the healing process. The product can be applied on a contact lens-type structure allowing it to be removed and reapplied as necessary.
