Dr. Salil Lachke, assistant professor of biological sciences at the University of Delaware, was recently granted $1.95 million from the National Institutes of Health for a study on cataracts and the cellular and molecular processes used in eye lens development.
For the study, Dr. Lachke is using a bioinformatics tool he developed called iSyTE (integrated Systems Tool for Eye gene discovery). He has reportedly identified several new cataract-linked genes and is exploring how they specifically produce proteins that bind to RNA involved in lens development.
