 June is Cataract Awareness Month

Did you know that June is Cataract Awareness Month? A number of organizations and companies are offering tips and other guidance to help practitioners talk to their patients about cataracts and help dispel some confusion they might have regarding their treatment options.

For starters, Prevent Blindness offers a free online course on cataract, including a PowerPoint presentation with a complete guide, as part of its Healthy Eyes Educational Series. Doctors can use this as a way to conduct discussions or seminars on the subject of cataracts. (See full press release below) Prevent Blindness also offers an online guide to cataract for consumers, as well as a downloadable facts and myths sheet.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recently released three facts patients should know about cataracts in observance of Cataract Awareness Month, including risk factors, how to lower cataract risk, and how cataract surgery can improve more than just a person's vision. They also a full primer on cataracts for patients, and also offer the EyeCare America public service program through which eligible seniors age 65 older may qualify for a no-cost eye exam.

And earlier today, Alcon announced it was partnering with actress Cheryl Ladd to launch the Know Your Cataract EYE-Q Campaign. According to Alcon, in a 2016 survey of 1,000 U.S. adults aged 60 and older who had been diagnosed with cataracts, only 25 percent said they had a full understanding of their condition and 20 percent — about one in five — thought there were other options besides surgery to treat the condition. The Cataract EYE-Quiz tests patients’ knowledge about cataracts and their treatment options.
