A new study recently published in Environmental Health Perspectives has found evidence of an association between cooking with biomass fuels and cataracts in women.
Researchers from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and other institutions conducted a population-based study of men and women in India over the age of 60 to look for potential risk factors for cataracts. According to their report, the researchers found that exposure to biomass fuels — such as wood, crop residues and dung — over an adult lifetime is associated with cataracts in women, but not in men.
