UEA Researchers Look for Ways to Help Prevent Secondary Cataract

Researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) have been looking at ways to help prevent the formation of posterior capsule opacification, or secondary cataract, following cataract surgery.

According to UEA, scientists found they were able to impede cell invasion in the posterior capsule by lowering the amount of growth factor around the intraocular lens (IOL). Additionally, they found vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in cell growth and survival, leading them to suggest anti-VEGF treatment as a target for new drug treatments to help prevent secondary cataract.
