Rayner Intraocular Lenses Marks 10-Year Anniversary of Two Key IOLs

17 April 2013. Hove, United Kingdom. Rayner Intraocular Lens, Ltd., the pioneering manufacturer of intraocular lenses, marks two 10-year milestones this month and next – the 10-year anniversary of the first implantation of its injectable toric IOL (now the T-flex®), as well as marking 10 years since production started of its C-flex® IOL.

The first implantation of the toric IOL, which was based on the Centreflex lens platform, was carried out by Prof. Gerd Auffarth, University of Heidelberg, Germany. The intraocular lens was custom-made for a cataract patient with a pre-existing 6 dioptres of corneal astigmatism.

“It was an honour to implant the first injectable Rayner toric IOL 10 years ago,” said Prof. Auffarth. “The technology has stood the test of time, consistently providing excellent correction of astigmatism. In addition, the ability to offer patients with higher levels of astigmatism a customised option for correction is incredibly important for our department.”

Rayner was the original toric IOL manufacturer – creating the first IOLs with toric optics  for English surgeon D. Peter Choyce in the 1950s. Of course, in that period, the lenses were made of rigid PMMA and inserted through large incisions.

Launched in May 2003, the C-flex was an enhanced version of Rayner’s original Centreflex IOL. The hydrophilic acrylic IOL features the Amon-Apple Enhanced Square Edge, which is a unique Rayner design that reduces posterior capsular opacification (PCO) by creating an highly effective physical barrier to cell migration. Designed in conjunction with Prof. Michael Amon and the late Prof. David Apple, the design ensures a protective barrier around the entire lens, included the haptic/optic junction.

Today, available in both aspheric and spherical models, the IOL has been implanted in hundreds of thousands of eyes throughout the world.

“Rayner is pleased to mark these milestones of two strategic parts of our IOL portfolio,” said Martin Jamieson, CEO, Rayner Intraocular Lenses. “We intend to build on the strong reputation of these two IOLs as we introduce new products into our portfolio and to our customers in 70 countries.”
