Gene Study Highlights Novel Genes In Primary Open Angle Glaucoma

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — Researchers from the Brien Holden Eye Research Centre, LV Prasad Eye Institute in India reveal the involvement of novel genes in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) during a presentation at the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Association of Vision and Ophthalmology this week.

The study analyzed 45, 000 genes that were validated through customized genotyping of 40 candidate genes involved in inflammation and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling and their expression level in the aqueous humor.

Results showed differential expressions o f ̴200 genes. Cased-controlled analysis using 384 variants of 40 candidates revealed association in 5 ECM-related genes. The mean concentrations of the ECM proteins were significantly higher in the aqueous humor of POAG subjects compared to unaffected subjects.
