Richmond Products, Inc
Albuquerque, NM – 30 September 2010. – More than 130 substances are known to induce color vision defects, referred to as acquired CVD and can occur at any age. Other causes include ocular and general pathology, trauma and industrial occupational exposure. Congenital (inherited) CVD occurs in about eight percent of men but only about 0.4 percent of women.
CVD was an important topic at a seminar during the 15th Congress of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society held in Beijing from September 16th to 20th . The 15th Congress was held in conjunction with the 25th Congress of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), also the occasion of the joint meeting of the APAO and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).
One of the key speakers from the United States at the Congress was Dr. James D. Bailey, OD, PhD, Professor at Southern California College of Optometry and an expert on color vision. He is the author of five book chapters and has had 25 academic papers on CVD published in scientific and clinical journals. The seminar focused on the increasing importance of color vision and its assessment in occupational situations with respect to employee and employer risk. The number of occupations that rely on good color vision is growing as the use of color increases in the workplace and more tasks increase in complexity. The seminar, sponsored by Richmond Products Inc. of Albuquerque, also discussed the increase of acquired CVD due mainly to a rise in the use of these Rx substances.
Commenting on the seminar, which attracted about 100 participants, Lloyd Powell, President of Richmond Products, said: “We are grateful to have the opportunity of sponsoring this discussion and to have Dr. Bailey as the key speaker. Participation was particularly lively, with optometrists, ophthalmologists and students showing a keen interest in color vision aspects that impact the population of China. I also thank Ms. Penny Wang of Beijing Purity Essilor Medical Instruments Inc., our distributor in China, for valuable help in organizing Dr. Bailey’s participation in the seminar.”
Dr. Bailey added: “The seminar helped emphasize how critical color vision is in both daily life and in the work place. I was impressed with the keen interest in color vision deficiency in China and the growing understanding in the medical profession of the importance of color vision as a key indicator of ocular health.”
